Selma is 9 years old and, since her parents died in an accident, has lived with Ruth, a rather strict neighbor lady who was only supposed to be temporarily responsible for Selma and her dog Casper. Selma dreams that she has a real family that she doesn't know about. We also see a completely different universe, Snøfall, a small village that lies by itself in an icy wasteland. Here we meet Julius, who is Santa Claus himself!

Ruth inherits an antique shop and Selma thinks it's absolutely fantastic. Ruth says it's just old stuff and junk there. Selma meets Håkon, who has just moved into the apartment building, together with his dad, Kjell. Håkon believes in Santa Claus and Selma is inspired to write a Christmas letter in which she wishes for a real family.

In Snøfall, Julius is approached by the Oracle and he goes wild with excitement when the Oracle tells him who the new apprentice will be. His secretary, Winter, is convinced that he will be the new apprentice. Ruth wants to sell the antique shop. A man from Children’s Best arrives who says that they have now found a family for Selma.

Julius receives the letter from Selma and wonders if she could be the daughter of his son, Albin. Selma and Ruth argue violently, and they both get very upset.

Selma walks all day along the expanse and finally she sees light far ahead. She has made it to Snofall. At home, Ruth is upset when she thinks that Children's Best has picked up Selma without giving notice.

Winter becomes so angry that he didn't become the new apprentice that he goes into The Dark to be filled with evil. In Snofall, Selma and Julius get to know each other better.

Julius is gone when Selma wakes up. Pil finds her and persuades her to come down to the Santa school. Selma goes out into the garden to look for Julius, but cannot find him.

Frida shows Selma around Snofall. Pil overhears Frida saying he is tiring to be with. Winter announces over the radio that he is substitute for Julius while he is away.

Today is the annual Christmas party, but Winter announces that it will be turned into a meeting, just for the adults. Selma and Pil sneak into the meeting. They must find out who the new apprentice is!

The adults search for Julius in the expanse and Winter plants Julius's hat there. Now the adults think that he has really thrown his hat away for good.

Winter claims that Julius doesn't want to be Santa anymore. Fortunately, there will be a snowball battle, which all the children have been really looking forward to.

Selma wants to go home from Snøfall, but can't find the way. Pil tries to persuade Selma to stay in Snøfall, so together they can try to find out what has happened to Julius. At the Santa school, Winter organizes a ceremony to mark that he is now Santa Claus.

Winter introduces many new rules in Snøfall. He wants peace and order! He says that today is the big cleaning day in Snøfall.

In the diary they found yesterday, it says that Julius was supposed to meet "my secret friend in the garden". Who could it be? And how can they get out into the garden, now that it has been forbidden to go out there?

Selma, Pil and Frida sneak out into the garden to look for Julius's secret friend. Winter is angry because people don't bother to follow the rules. Many customers come to antique shop and the Christmas letters disappear at night.

Selma, Pil and Frida sneak out at night to look for the night birds that Trixter told them about. Svendsen thinks it is Ruth who takes the Christmas letters out of the mailbox in the evening.

Selma, Frida and Pil wake up at Trixter's and he shows them that Julius's sleigh is with him. In the antique shop, Ruth feels that she is going completely coo-coo. She is happy when a lady calls who wants to buy.

When the sleigh shows up in the square, Winter says it's a sled that he made to please everyone. Nobody believes what the children say!

A strange light visits Selma all day. Pil and Frida are no longer allowed to be with Selma, so she has to follow the strange light alone.

Selma, Frida and Pil try to figure out all the strange things that the Oracle said. Where could the Shadow Cave be? They must bring all the children with them to solve the mystery.

Selma, Pil and Frida go out into The Dark. The Shadow Cave and Julius must be out there! Winter gets so angry when he discovers that the bun ban is not respected that he closes Hjerterud's bakery.

Julius is back! But can they manage to read all the letters and blow on all the Christmas bulbs so that the road to VU opens up?

Finally Christmas Eve! Will they manage to get to VU so that Christmas joy is spread to everyone? Selma has to decide whether she wants to go back to VU or whether she will stay in Snøfall.
